Guide to Glowing Winter Skin - Part I

18 DECEMBER, 2020

Low temperatures, cold winds and city pollution certainly aren’t synonymous with a radiant complexion; add central heating to the mix and dull, stressed and tight suddenly become the most suitable adjectives to describe your skin.

As we stretch into the winter months, it’s not just our wardrobe that requires some changes, it’s our skincare routines too. With the dipping of temperatures inviting the ceremonial cranking of our radiators, our skin often needs just a bit of TLC to provide it with the tools to cope with the rapid changes in climate. Introducing nourishing cleansers, antioxidant rich blends, serums powered by plant oils and hydrating moisturisers into our routines is an easy way of giving our parched yet congested some much needed attention.

Fear not; we at 001 are on hand to help and offer some foolproof a three part manual on maintaining that summer glow, even in winter.

How to cleanse in winter?

The question we get asked most frequently is 'what type of cleanser should I be using in winter?' Our answer is often the same. Reach for nourishing, oil-based cleansers and put the wipes and super foaming washes down. It’s essential to maintain a strong hydro-lipidic barrier in the winter months to help your skin recover from the summer and to add a hefty dose of nourishment to cope with drops in humidity and temperature. Preserving the natural oils and sebum on our skin is important to keep our outer skin layers aligned and in good health.

Yes, cleansing is an essential step, but in the colder months it needs to be done in moderation to ensure our skin barrier isn’t weakened. A thin or damaged barrier can encourage all sorts of complexion woes, it will allow irritants in and it’s likely to affect how sensitive your skin is too.

For dry/sensitive/normal skin:

In winter drier or more sensitive skin types should avoid too much foam and water and instead utilise oil-based cleansers which can be gently wiped away to remove any impurities or dirt on your skin. The slightly alkaline nature of foam can weaken your skins barrier so it’s important to keep your skin nourished and balanced.

Our oil-based, omega rich Alpha-Paradise Cleansing Dew is about to become your best friend this winter. Blending Jojoba, Apricot Kernel and sweet almond with a calming combination of Jasmine, Neroli and Ylang Ylang, this lightweight yet sumptuous cleanser performs a penetrative clean on our skin, lifting dead skin cells, makeup, debris and pollution our skin has picked up and leaving our skin nourished and moisturised. Cleansing often leaves our skin feeling dry and tight, however the oils used in this product bind to the oils in our complexion and remove any dirt without disrupting the natural PH or barrier of the skin.

For Oily/Combination skin:

With oily or acne prone skin types, it’s still super important to maintain moisture and hydration, particularly in the winter months. We’d recommend double cleansing with two gentle, skin nourishing cleansers rather than one harsh, drying product. The second cleanse helps to remove any leftover oil residue and creates a seamless base for further skincare application.

Start with our Alpha-Paradise Cleansing Dew then follow with our deeply clearing Exfoliating & Conditioning Cleanser. With very fine foaming agents to avoid drying your skin, this wash deeply cleanses skin and gently exfoliates to dissolve skin cells and reduce excess sebum. It’s packed with refining Lactic Acid, anti-inflammatory Allantoin and antioxidant Bulgarian Rose to leave skin moisturised, brightened and radiant.
